NIGHT CULTURE

Night culture, not nightclubs. You will encounter obvious hot spots like Rembrandtplein or Leidseplein on your own during the average night wander or pub crawl. So instead, here’s a gradually growing list of interesting places that make Amsterdam…so Amsterdam.

De Nieuwe Anita is an excellent dive bar with all walks of life giving colour to the place, much like its peeling wallpaper and well-worn sofas. Go for regular singer-songwriter gigs and an eclectic crowd. (It’s even a lovely walk: head west of Dam Square until you get to the Westerkerk/Anne Frankhuis area. Stand with your back to the door of the Westerkerk, find a bridge on either side of you to cross the Prinsengracht to reach the perpendicular Bloemgracht. Walk this gorgeous Jordaan canal and bear straight until you get to the Hugo de Grootplein (accessible also by Tram 3) and you’re there.)

Roest is part dance floor, part industrial bar set in an old gas factory adorned in freaky art for sale. DJs are mellow, as is the hipster crowd. Very worth taking Trams 10 or 26 to Rietland Park and finding your way under the train tracks and behind the huge newspaper building to get there.

There are two fantastic venues along the Southern fringes of Vondelpark worth venturing out of the old city center for:

1) Head to Overtoom 301 for quirky culture, a hip cinema, gallery, a bar, events, dance, and even Tuesday night ping pong. Check their agenda.

2) For some of the best gigs in town, head to Occii on Amstelveenseweg 134 along the southern fringe of Vondelpark and easily accessible by having a look at their contact details here.

TICKETS

The only half-price ticket kiosk in town is the Last Minute Ticket Shop whose link shows that day’s offerings and three locations to purchase tickets in person only until about 19:30 the night of the show. This won’t feature underground venues but more famous concert halls, theatres, or comedy clubs.
